Native to the United States, the Southern Live Oak is one of the most iconic trees in America. Known for its strength, longevity, and massive spreading canopies, mature specimens can become extraordinary trees with powerful trunks and branches extending far from their base. In nature, Southern Live Oaks can live for centuries, with the species capable of reaching 250 to 500 years in favorable conditions.

This Southern Live Oak has been in bonsai training for approximately 15 years and features a substantial 6 inch Nebari, established primary structure, and developing secondary and tertiary branching. It already presents a strong, mature silhouette while offering plenty of opportunity for continued refinement.

Southern Live Oak is a broadleaf evergreen, retaining its foliage throughout most of the year while briefly shedding older leaves as new growth emerges. Its small, leathery leaves respond well to bonsai cultivation, while the bark develops increasing texture and character with age.

Unlike tropical bonsai, Southern Live Oak is considerably more cold tolerant and is generally hardy in USDA Zones 7B through 10B. It can also be grown by collectors in colder regions when appropriate winter protection is provided, making this native species accessible to bonsai enthusiasts well beyond its natural range.
